Wheeler and Wazee are two male black lab puppies born on July 15, 2010. Vail is a female labradoodle (mix of labrador retriever and standard poodle) born on July 10, 2010. All three have been placed with puppy raisers and have started attending puppy classes. Pictures are attached all three. Do you have a unique talent or service you can provide? Do you own your own business? Do you have businesses in the Denver area that you regularly patronize? All of these things can become a great silent auction item for Bow Ties & Tails:

* Offer a weekend stay at your vacation home.

* Offer an item or serviice that you can provide, i.e. arts and crafts, music or voice lessons, foreign language lessons, trip planning expertise, cooking lesson, pet sitting, dog training, the possibilities are endless.

* If you own your own business or have a family member or close friend who does, ask them if they would offer a gift certificate or item for the silent auction.

* Ask businesses that you regularly patronize if they would offer an item or gift certificate for the silent auction. Bow Ties and Tails—this year’s major CaPR fundraiser on October 23, 2010, is moving right along. For all dedicated puppy raisers, advanced trainers, puppy sitters, general volunteers, and office staff, this is a great chance to further CaPR’s mission—and have a lot of fun doing it!

Bow Ties & Tails will include cooking demonstrations by a local celebrity chef, delicious hors d’oeuvres, and tasty wine. The excitement continues with a string quartet, and silent and live auctions. Look for our “Doggie Bag” sales, a $20 blind purchase. (CaPR guarantees that the contents of every Doggie Bag will have a value of at least $20.00 for you and your favorite pooch.)

Guests at the event also have the chance to win a large-capacity washer and dryer with our own “Bow Ties & Tails” version of bobbing for apples—guests purchase one or more $20 “chances” -- numbered tennis balls. At the end of the evening, a dog will “pick” the winning tennis ball from a baby pool full of “chances!”

But, to make this event work as a major fund-raiser for CaPR (and fun time for all), we need your help to start accumulating items for the auctions and doggie bags. Could you ask your favorite merchants, your friends, your neighbors for donations to this wonderful cause? Hard goods are great for display in the silent auction; think about sports tickets, rounds of golf, time shares, and gift cards. People also tend to bid well on items such gift baskets, colorful art, jewelry, pottery, etc. “Smaller-ticket” items (such as magnets, note pads) may be used for the Doggie Bags or grouped together in an attractive basket by Committee members.

Here’s another option: if you aren’t comfortable asking for auction items, you may want to donate something yourself. When you purchase an item and donate it to CaPR, the purchase price of the donated item is 100% tax deductible (as always, check with your tax professional!) Please call DeAnn Reher, Auction Chair, to arrange pick up or delivery of auction and Doggie Bag items.

We’ve attached four PDF files with information about Bow Ties & Tails.

One form explains the event and how you can help. Another form is for you to complete and turn in with each donation you collect. The others forms contain information about event sponsorships and ticket purchasing. Please print as many of these as you need!

Also, the Bow Ties & Tails website, www.bowtiesandtails.org, is up and running. Please ask donors and guests alike to visit the site. Attendees can make reservations online or complete the “Purchase Tickets” form (one of the attached forms you’re receiving) and mail it to the CaPR office with payment. Be sure to spread the word so we have a full house for the evening with plenty of items for the auctions and Doggie Bags.! Everyone will enjoy a fun evening while supporting a local charity that serves Colorado residents.

Please spread the word about Bow Ties & Tails far and wide! CaPR is only able to continue its good work because of the great people like you who are involved with our organization. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Please call the Canine Partners office, 303-364-9040 with questions about the evening.

Thank you so much,

Canine Partners of the Rockies Bow Ties & Tails Committee

Micki Elliot

Amy Finch

Rene Green

Lauren Klopfenstein

Linda Port

DeAnn Reher, Auction Chair, 303-885-5275

Joyce Thielen, Sponsorship Chair, 303-981-6413

Lynne Thielen

Taylor - Our Newest Puppy in Training

Our newest puppy in training is Taylor. Last January, CaPR attended a CFC event and was awarded $1,000 from iCAN! This generous donation and many others are contributed by government employees who choose to donate to our organization.

For several months CaPR travels to many different government offices and facilities to present to employees what we do and talk about our mission. The employees can choose to donate to a variety of charities that are also involved in this program.

If you are a Federal employee and would like to donate to Canine Partners through your employer our CFC number is 22961, and if you work for the State of Colorado our number is 3424. Bridget, a beautiful Golden Retriever, was "borrowed" from another organization and was transported to Colorado to have a litter for CaPR. The stud was an equally handsome Black Labrador Retriever named Jammer. CaPR welcomed a litter of nine pups! Seven of them were placed in CaPR's puppy raising program to be trained. These puppies are all still in our training program and have grown so much! We look forward to seeing these pups in training become a Canine Partner to someone with a disability, so they can help with opening doors, turning on light switches, helping them get dressed, and much more.

Visit Bridget's Puppies blog at http://www.bridgetpuppies.blogspot.com/ to see how these young puppies developed and began stimulation training early on.

Serving Beer to Help CaPR

Canine Partners of the Rockies is always looking for great ways to help fundraise for our organization. Our future Service Dogs come into our program at two to three months of age and are usually donated by generous breeders. Canine Partners primarily uses Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers. Just like children, puppies need a warm, nurturing home to help them grow and achieve their potential, so our cuddly fur-babies are welcomed into the arms of Canine Partners Puppy Raisers. A Puppy Raiser is a volunteer who accepts the commitment of providing a positive environment, financial care, and a loving home for the puppy’s first year and a half. After approximately 18 months with a Puppy Raiser, a puppy is ready to be evaluated for entrance into Advanced Training where he will then continue on the path to becoming a successful working partner for a person with a disability.

Puppies and their Raisers attend semi-monthly puppy training classes at Canine Partners of the Rockies, where they work on key commands such as “here” and “stay” and begin to learn some of the specialized tasks they'll need to perform as service dogs. But one of the most important aspects of the puppy raising experience is socialization. To help puppies become accustomed to the various situations they may encounter as service dogs, Puppy Raisers take their puppies virtually everywhere – to the movies, on airplane flights, and walking down crowded city streets. Puppies need to be exposed to dogs and cats, adults and children, loud noises, machinery, elevators, and new smells and sounds.

Canine Partners of the Rockies' Puppy Raisers are very giving people; their selfless dedication to their puppies enables Canine Partners of the Rockies to provide devoted and reliable adult working dogs to people who need canine partners to assist them with the challenges of daily life.
